ListenTo: Welcome Back EnerJi
What’s up Hip Hop & Hookah Fam! It’s been far too long! How the hell have YOU been for the past 9 months??
Me? Well, let’s just say, life has a way of giving you exactly what you think you want only to use it as a lesson to grow you. I found myself in a version of a dream job that turned slowly and unexpectedly into the kind of nightmare you need to have to shake you into a new perspective. I’m not at all sure where I’m headed next (career wise), but I am grateful for the lessons learned, the experience gained, and the expansion of my scope on many levels.
What I do know is that I am glad to be free of the creativity crippling captivity that has held me hostage for longer than we’re going to discuss. I have a pretty diverse playlist for you here and I hope you enjoy it. There’s a little something for everyone in this Mix. Sampa the Great kicks things off with her most recent release Final Form which is so much Hip Hop sickness. Since her single Blue Boss found my eardrums in 2016 I’ve been hooked on this Dope Queen MC. She’s hands down one of my favorite woman rappers. Super slept on. Get into it!
From there I have a few of my current fave Afrobeat and afrobeat-esque tracks featuring GoldLink, Masego, and Burna Boy. Things take a turn around track nine and head for what I’m listening to right now in the Brazil Funk/Reggaeton/Bachata sphere. I sprinkled in a little Bossa Nova (inspired by a recent rooftop BossaNova BBQ party I attended). We flirt with a little island influenced pop, take a quick dive into some Deep Latin House and come up for air with Todrick Hall’s Nails, Hair , Hips, Heels. There’s a bit more pop, but it’s funky. Mayer Hawthorne and Mac Ayers sing us soulfully into a lo-fi/chill-hop break that stretches to the end of the playlist. Tame Impala’s Borderline is a must hear as is Freddie Joachim’s Sun Dress.
The playlist is available on Spotify, and Youtube!

Also take the time to check out the artist featured in this post - GDBee ART. Her work is so amazing and super adorable! It’s not as easy as you might think to find art that portrays black and brown women and femmes - especially by a woman artist - so when I do, I have to share!
